About Images

Picture
eSafety Resources: Images
Most girls post images on Instagram and/or Snapchat. These pictures are often with friends but also include images about exciting things, when they are on holidays or enjoying food experiences as well as when they were feeling good about how they looked.

About selfies

Selfies are the images most frequently discussed. “Basically three-quarters of what I swipe through are selfies.” Most selfies are created for a bit of fun and entertain but also out of boredom or for their crush.
Types of Selfies
Picture
Candid: “a pic taken that you don’t know about until after”
Picture
Casual or Genuine: “natural and not set up, just caught in the moment having fun”
Picture
Regular: “basically you use filters but don’t overdo it”
Picture
Mirror: “you face the camera at the mirror and then take the pic”
Picture
Pretty: “adding filters to make yourself look good and stuff”
Picture
Ugly: “deliberately unattractive or funny pics sent to friends for a laugh”
Picture
Staged or Trying: “it looks planned and over pronounced”
Picture
Half Hidden: “cover your face a bit so that it’s a bit blurry or hidden”

What's okay

Picture
Funny pics where people are having a good time.
Picture
Age appropriate clothing that is not too revealing.
Picture
Pics that don’t change your appearance better than it is in real life.
Picture
Just being your natural self.

What's not!

Picture
Nudey rudey pictures (e.g., pics involving various stages of undress) “even if someone asks, don’t do it!”
Picture
Pouting & all that stuff. “You don’t need to pop out that much. It’s a bit tense and not real.”
Picture
Trying too hard. “Don’t change your appearance to make it better than real life. It’s showing off and trying too hard.”
Picture
Overdoing it. “It’s really a classic teenage girl post but I don’t like that sort of thing. I get sick of seeing stuff that’s overdone.”
